🧼🥬 Fresh Produce — Food Cleaning & Storage Guide
How to protect freshness, prevent mold, and reduce waste without overthinking
Food responds to moisture, airflow, temperature, and timing — not rules.
This guide helps you work with each food’s nature.
🍅 Tomatoes
🌱 Storage Basics — Tomatoes
Unripe Tomatoes
- Store on the counter
- Room temperature
- Stem-side down
- Out of direct sunlight
✔ This prevents moisture loss at the stem scar and allows even ripening.
Ripe Tomatoes
- Can remain on the counter for 1–2 days
- For longer storage, move to the refrigerator
- Store stem-side down in a container
⚠️ Note: Tomatoes can stain counters when fully ripe — this is normal.
Cut Tomatoes
- Always refrigerate
- Store in a sealed container
- Use within 2–3 days
Tomatoes Bought Cold (Already Refrigerated at the Store)
You have two options:
- Not fully ripe yet → move to the counter to finish ripening
- Fully ripe → keep refrigerated to slow breakdown
❄️ Fridge vs Counter — What to Know
Refrigeration:
- Slows ripening ✔
- Extends shelf life ✔
- Dulls flavor & can make texture mealy ⚠️
💡 Tip:
Bring refrigerated tomatoes back to room temperature before eating to restore some flavor and aroma.
🍅 How to Tell If a Tomato Is Ripe
Use your senses, not dates or labels.
1️⃣ Touch (Most Reliable)
- Should feel slightly soft, not firm
- Gentle give when pressed — not mushy
2️⃣ Smell
- Ripe tomatoes smell sweet and earthy
- No scent usually means under-ripe
3️⃣ Color
- Even, rich color (red, orange, yellow depending on variety)
- No large green patches (unless heirloom variety)
4️⃣ Skin
- Smooth and taut
- Not shriveled, cracked, or leaking
