Poultice / Compress

Description

A poultice is made by applying crushed fresh or rehydrated dried herbs directly to the skin. A compress uses a cloth soaked in a strong herbal infusion or decoction applied externally.

Use

Ideal for localized pain, inflammation, infection, or injury. Poultices draw out toxins, soothe swelling, and stimulate circulation.

Application

  • External — Apply directly over the affected area (skin-safe herbs only).
  • Poultice Preparation: Mash or mix herbs with warm water or oil until pasty; spread on cloth or gauze, then place on skin for 20–60 minutes.
  • Compress Preparation: Soak a cloth in warm herbal tea/decoction, wring slightly, and apply for 10–30 minutes.

Tip

Common herbs:

  • Drawing & detoxifying: Charcoal, clay, plantain.
  • Anti-inflammatory: Ginger, comfrey, turmeric.
  • Antimicrobial: Garlic, goldenseal, echinacea.
