Description
A poultice is made by applying crushed fresh or rehydrated dried herbs directly to the skin. A compress uses a cloth soaked in a strong herbal infusion or decoction applied externally.
Use
Ideal for localized pain, inflammation, infection, or injury. Poultices draw out toxins, soothe swelling, and stimulate circulation.
Application
- External — Apply directly over the affected area (skin-safe herbs only).
- Poultice Preparation: Mash or mix herbs with warm water or oil until pasty; spread on cloth or gauze, then place on skin for 20–60 minutes.
- Compress Preparation: Soak a cloth in warm herbal tea/decoction, wring slightly, and apply for 10–30 minutes.
Tip
Common herbs:
- Drawing & detoxifying:Â Charcoal, clay, plantain.
- Anti-inflammatory:Â Ginger, comfrey, turmeric.
- Antimicrobial:Â Garlic, goldenseal, echinacea.
